The Moving Portraits:

The moving portraits are another aspect to photography that I’ve been working on for a number of years now. I had this idea I wanted to experiment with, and at first, technology (or lack of) tried to get in my way. But it was an itch that had to be scratched. A personal project that to begin with, was simply for me; however, as it grew, so did the concept and the direction, which in turn, has led to creative commissions and major exhibitions. Was it difficult? At first, fuck, yes! Was it a question of the deeper you dig, the easier it gets? Not at all, I did feel a little overwhelmed with technological and logistical issues, which had never been done before. I’m glad I did it though – absolutely overjoyed with how it was achieved and I wouldn’t change any of the process for the world. As a result, I’ve become the first photographer to exhibit in the main room of The Royal Albert Hall for 2 consecutive nights. Like most things, getting the ball rolling was hard. A lot of people didn’t understand why I was doing it, they didn’t get the concept or they couldn’t envisage how digital portraiture would look 5/10 years down the line. People said to me “Why not stick to either stills or direct videos” or “How are you going to display this to clients/the viewer”, but I understood the power of this niche digital portraiture straight away. We live in the 21st century where access to digital media is literally at our fingertips 24 hours a day. My work is grabbing your attention with a subject that is in real time, no cheap gimmicks, no fast editing, no GIFS, just great lighting and interesting sitters. I’m continuing to shoot more in my own time, with like-minded people. I have 2 more exhibitions on the way with completely new subject matter to work with.
